The Mantle
The mantle is not for one or two to wear
Nor the burden alone for a few to bear
We all are in this cesspool together
So it was in the beginning and will be forever
For on this earth there’s always been
Injustice that the eyes have seen
Here and there louts and thieves
This is what this world gives
There’s talk of the peace of an almighty
Usual promises purported to a deity
Invisible to all save to those that have believed
Derisible to the brave that decline to be deceived
Consoled some are by a hope of paradise
Futility masked by eschatology, I surmise
Whatever … let’s each try to be the man
And however … reach to do the best we can.
